The value(s) of Europe

These exercises of nombrilism, appearing today as a kind of collective European pastime, are rather misleading. It is true that one can never speak too much about the common values at the very origin of the European integration. But only if one speaks of them indeed, assuming their implications and drawing all their consequences. However, nowadays they are generally evoked only to compensate for the deficit in political will and to divert attention from the genuine “finalities” of the integration. They are used as an easy alibi, since one can proclaim there is not merely question of an economic union, but also of a "community of values". What is perfect for smokescreen, but way too little for Europe.
