Europe : chronicle of a decline foretold (demography, immigration, integration)

Népszabadság Online 21 January 2006

Language of the original publication: Hungarian

It is always an edifying spectacle to observe the EU’s leaders - masters in the art of denial, camouflage and shelving of all delicate issues - when they find themselves cornered. Such was the case at the time of the riots in France, notably in front of the rather vigorous warnings translating the internal tensions of European societies. This warning was neither the last nor the most vigorous one. For the moment. Since obviously, it is not in last autumn that the puzzle relating to the ever-falling demographic indicators and to the beneficial or destructive effects that mass immigration will bring to them appeared for the first time. Neither will it go away as easily as the burnt-out car carcasses. The question is put and it remains with us in the form of an increasingly powerful internal and external pressure, and with increasingly significant internal and external consequences.

The French version offers a rough translation possibility at the bottom of the page.
