Some current news in European and transatlantic affairs, briefly presented and commented on.
• The Russo-American consultations on missile defence continue, and the financing of the “third site” is approved, although with some cuts, by the Congress.
• In the “pre-designed” host countries of the US anti-missile system, popular enthusiasm is obviously is still from materializing.
• On the Afghan theatre, NATO multiplies calls and warnings in direction of the Member States, while reports of the situation on the ground are markedly divergent.
• A new American report raises a long series of question marks about the programme F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (aka JSF or Lightning II).
• The preparations to create a US command in Africa (AFRICOM) intensify, despite the lack of eagerness from the countries in question and bureaucratic skirmishes in Washington DC.
• The EU’s African policy is in the process of redefinition, against the backdrop of a hardly masked rivalry between ESDP and NATO in this field.
• The European Defence Agency (EDA) announces an action plan for the European defence industrial and technological base (EDITB).
