Autonomy or subjection: the military dimension of the call for European sovereignty

Europa (European geopolitical review) n°1, November 2009 - January 2010

Language of the original publication: French

First, it is not betraying a secret to note that the issue of European sovereignty arises, at the moment and for quite some time now, with regard to the United States. During the last half-century, under the security umbrella, real or imaginary, of America, a matrix of subordination have been put in place in most of the countries of the old continent, be it material (abandonment of own development and production capabilities in strategic sectors), organizational (integration into the NATO command under US direction), operational (stall in technological intelligence capabilities on presumption of availability of information collected overseas) or psychological (reflex of alignment and of self-censorship with regard to Washington’s policies)...

Three preliminary evidence
- America and its eagerness for control over Europe
- Europe and its dependence on U.S.
- Independence as a guarantee of future

Three illustrative areas
- Space-based intelligence
- Chain of Command
- The armament sector

Three roles to be clarified
- Europe
- America
- France
